Project Description

CFD analysis of flow of an artificial kayak river

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an end-user application in the industry sector, some of which are presented on the examples page of studies on this site. The project presented here puts this discipline at the service of sport. A canoe kayak river is about 200m long and the creation of a test bench to test the positions of obstacles and their effect on the waves can be tedious. Numerical simulation offers an alternative to have a precise idea of the kayak course from the design stage.

Boundary conditions - flow kayak river

Boundary conditions and physical models

  • The flow of the artificial river is imposed
  • A multiphase model of interface tracking is used

Simulation results

The video above shows the establishment of current over time. The descents of the athletes are made on a flow in steady state, when the speed profile no longer evolves otherwise than by the unsteady phenomena such as the drops of vortices. The velocity profile displayed on the free surface gives interesting information for the positioning of the travel gates in accelerated zones and in the recirculation zones.
